Learn the Free Beach Trolley Now, Before Nights of Lights Changes the Route

Since Thursday, Oct. 1, an Old Town Trolley has been running the full length of A1A Beach Boulevard, stopping at City Hall and the Pier on its way to and from the Visitor Information Center downtown. It costs nothing to ride. On Friday and Saturday nights it runs until 11 p.m.

The route has a short honeymoon. The city's mobility manager has said that once Nights of Lights begins, the trolley will run a modified route because of holiday traffic. This year's season starts Saturday, Nov. 21. That leaves about seven weeks when the beach route runs exactly as designed. It's the best time to work out which stop is yours, how long the wait is, and whether it can replace a downtown parking run.

A downtown loop that crossed the bridge

The STAR Circulator, short for St. Augustine Rider, used to be a compact downtown shuttle with three stops: the Visitor Information Center, the Bayfront at Avenida Menendez and Hypolita Street, and Cathedral Place at Cordova Street. The expanded route leaves Cathedral Place, crosses to Anastasia Island, makes 15 more stops along Anastasia Boulevard and A1A Beach Boulevard, then comes back through Cathedral Place to the Visitor Information Center.

The idea came from last winter. During the 2025–26 Nights of Lights, the city ran a separate evening shuttle to the beach, and First Coast News reported that the strong interest in that service led to the year-round expansion. Mobility Manager Marcus Pinson described the plan on the city's "Break Room" program in July:

"We're expanding that route, its going over the Bridge and making multiple stops. It will stop at different venues along the way, all along A1A Boulevard. And then lopping back around to the VIC."

An FDOT grant pays for the service and Old Town Trolley operates it. Jacksonville Today reported that the grant covers the program through the end of 2029. After that, the cities will need new grant money or will have to fund it themselves.

The stop order is the part to learn

Most of the stop names are hotels, and that makes the map look like a visitor shuttle. The order matters more than the names. On the city's route graphic, the trolley heads south along one set of stops, turns around at the Quality Inn, and comes back north along a different set.

Order Stop Address
1 Bayfront Downtown
2 Plaza Downtown
3 Anastasia Blvd. South Anastasia Blvd.
4 St. Augustine Alligator Farm 999 Anastasia Blvd.
5 St. Augustine Beach City Hall 2200 A1A S.
6 Hilton Garden Inn 401 A1A Beach Blvd.
7 Best Western Seaside 541 A1A Beach Blvd.
8 Courtyard by Marriott 605 A1A Beach Blvd.
9 Quality Inn 901 A1A Beach Blvd.
10 Guy Harvey Resort 860 A1A Beach Blvd.
11 La Fiesta Inn and Suites 810 A1A Beach Blvd.
12 Castillo Real Resort 530 A1A Beach Blvd.
13 Hampton Inn 430 A1A Beach Blvd.
14 Embassy Suites / Pier 300 and 350 A1A Beach Blvd.
15 Surf Station 1020 Anastasia Blvd.
16 Anastasia Blvd. North Anastasia Blvd.
17 Plaza Downtown

A few things follow from that order. The Embassy Suites / Pier stop at the county's Ocean Pier Park address is on the return leg. If you board there, you're already pointed back toward town, with only Surf Station and Anastasia Boulevard between you and downtown. Coming out from downtown, the first stops on A1A Beach Boulevard are Hilton Garden Inn at 401 and Best Western Seaside at 541.

The stops near the Pier come in pairs. Hilton Garden Inn at 401 is on the way out, and Hampton Inn at 430 is on the way back. Best Western Seaside at 541 and Castillo Real at 530 make the same kind of pair farther south. If you live on a side street between the 300 and 600 blocks, you'll probably board at one stop and get off at a different one.

The city's graphic shows 14 stops on the island side, while the city's announcement says 15. Pinson mentioned "another stop along A1A Beach Boulevard near Sarbez" in July. Sarbez! is at 115 Anastasia Blvd., close to the bridge, so that stop has not been pinned down. Check the live map before counting on it.

Thirty minutes, and how to see it coming

Trolleys leave the Visitor Information Center at 9 a.m. and pick up along the route about every 30 minutes, according to Jacksonville Today. If you miss one, you wait about half an hour, so a little planning goes a long way.

Old Town Trolley's web-based Trolley Tracker shows a live map that includes the STAR Circulator, with a "Tap for ETA" option at each stop. Bookmark it on your phone before the first ride. The city's own STAR FAQ page still describes the old three-stop route and a 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. schedule, so it isn't a reliable guide to the new service yet. It also says nothing about bikes, beach chairs, coolers, or pets. For questions it lists 904-795-STAR and notes that one bus is wheelchair accessible.

Days Service hours
Sunday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Friday and Saturday 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.

The hours end when the service ends, and that isn't necessarily when the last trolley reaches your stop. On a late Saturday, check the tracker before dessert.

What it actually saves a beach resident

The obvious pitch is the parking bill, and for a resident that savings is smaller than it looks. The Historic Downtown Parking Facility charges $20 per vehicle per entry from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and $5 per entry from 5 to 9 p.m., as listed by Florida's Historic Coast in August 2026. St. Johns County residents who register with the city pay $3 per garage entry and $0.50 per hour at city meters. You can register online or at 50 Bridge Street with a driver's license, vehicle registration, and proof of residency.

For a registered resident, the trolley saves $3 at most. The bigger change is that you don't need to drive at all. You skip the Bridge of Lions traffic, the hunt for a space, and the question of who drives home after dinner on King Street. Downtown, the trolley stops at the Bayfront, Cathedral Place, and the Visitor Information Center, which covers most of what you'd walk to anyway.

The trip works in the other direction too. On launch day, Action News Jax reported city officials calling the first day a success, though the station gave no ridership figures. If friends are staying downtown, they can now reach the beach without a car.

Where the beach stops actually put you

By street number, these local spots sit closest to the trolley's beach stops, and each has confirmed it's open in 2026:

  • Crabby's Beachside, 361 A1A Beach Blvd., serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner per the St. Augustine Record in March. By address it falls between the Embassy Suites / Pier stop and Hampton Inn at 430.
  • Café Eleven, 501 A1A Beach Blvd., one short block from the beach and a venue for live music shows. By address it falls between Hampton Inn at 430 and Castillo Real at 530.
  • Beachcomber, 2 A St., posting daily specials as recently as Oct. 3.
  • Surf Station, 1020 Anastasia Blvd., which is a named stop in its own right.
  • St. Augustine Alligator Farm, 999 Anastasia Blvd., also a named stop, useful for visiting family on a free day out.

St. Augustine Beach's new e-bike rules are worth knowing for the walk or ride to a stop. The City Commission adopted Ordinance 26-06 on Sept. 8. It sets requirements for helmets, rider age, speed, and sidewalk use for electric bicycles and similar devices, and the police department is handing out an explanatory brochure.

The Pier stop, while the Pier is closed

The St. Johns County Ocean and Fishing Pier has been fully closed since May 13 for piling repairs, and the county's target for finishing is the end of November. During the work, the north beach access is closed, so use the south entrance. The Pier Gift Shop is still open, and the county says permitted Pier Park events and activities won't be affected. The county hasn't posted a progress update since June, so treat late November as a target, not a promise.

The park stays busy in the meantime. The Wednesday Pier Farmers Market at 350 A1A Beach Blvd. is free and runs 8 a.m. to noon through October, then 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. from November through April. The trolley starts at 9 a.m., so a market morning by trolley means arriving a bit after opening.

A calendar for the clean window

The weeks before Nov. 21 already have a few events within reach of a beach stop:

  1. Tuesday, Oct. 6, 5 to 8 p.m. The City of St. Augustine Beach hosts its free National Night Out at the Pier, with food, activities, and local nonprofits.
  2. Every Wednesday morning. The Pier Farmers Market at 350 A1A Beach Blvd.
  3. Friday, Oct. 16, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The police department's annual Tricks and Treats at 2300 A1A South, near the City Hall stop at 2200 A1A S.
  4. Friday and Saturday nights. Service runs until 11 p.m., which is the easiest time to test a downtown dinner without a car.

After that, the route changes. Nights of Lights runs Nov. 21, 2026, through Jan. 18, 2027. As of Oct. 3, the Nights of Lights parking guide from Visit St. Augustine says 2026–27 shuttle details aren't available yet. Last season, the downtown daytime route shrank to 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and a separate evening route served Anastasia Island from 5 p.m. to midnight, connecting at 201 Gerado Street on the east side of the Bridge of Lions. That was last year's setup, and this year's could look different.

The city's free Holiday Market at the Ocean Pier, 350 A1A Beach Blvd., is Saturday, Dec. 12, from 3 to 7 p.m. That falls inside the modified season, so check the posted holiday schedule before planning to arrive by trolley.
